COLLARENEBRI NSW

(Author's Note: Collarenebri is on the Gwydir Hwy from Moree to Walgett, Post is out of order)

I didn't sleep too well last night but still managed to get up early then, after Breakfast at Mackas, I set off again along the Gwydir. A flat and featureless 140k latter I pulled into the tiny Township of Collarenebri, known as "Collie" to the locals. By far the smallest place so far.
Collarenebri came into being in 1860 when William Earl established a Pub called the Squatter's Arms on the Barwon River at a place the Aboriginals called "Collarindabri" meaning "Place of Flowers".  By the end of 1865 there were a number of houses and in 1867 a Post Office was opened.  The Town grew rapidly and by the 1890's a bore was sunk making Sheep grazing viable in the area. Captain Thunderbolt was also active in the area in 1886 robbing the local Storekeeper of 22 Pounds and later the local Pub the Squatters Arms.
The ladies at the Info Centre (yes there is one but it's also the Post Office) said that about 400 people live here. Well, I counted 4 cars and 6 people in the whole place. There is a Pub of course, the Post Office one Shop and a Cafe. Everyone except the PO Ladies and shopkeepers where Aboriginal, and by the look of the residential side streets (2) so is the rest of the residents. Everyone was really just hanging about. I almost fell asleep as I looked around, it felt like Siesta time. The Pub was Old and interesting and the Water Tower at the entrance to the Main Street was worth recording and so yes, I took Photos. After 15mins all was done and I turned left to Walgett for the last 80k for the day.
