NEWCASTLE CREEK BRIDGE, A TRUE FREE CAMP

We had traveled 275 kms from The Pebbles and were all weary when we arrived at our planned stop at Newcastle Waters free campsite, only to find that it was already fully populated and there was certainly no space for our 5 Motorhomes. So, in true Grey Nomad fashion, we set off to find a place to stay for the night. With all eyes looking out for a roadside clearing, gravel pit or other suitable place where we could park for the night, we returned to the Hwy. It was shear luck that Jules, in the lead vehicle spotted a track beside a small bridge that crossed little Newcastle Creek, only about 5 kms up the road. Down they went to investigate and soon reported via UHF Radio that there was good access and room beside a small billabong under the bridge for all of us. What a find really, with a pleasant view both of the waterhole and the surrounding bushland, plentiful birdlife and a quiet night spent, except for the continuous croaking of cane toads. Ah, this is the true essence of free camping; find an uncharted spot with a nice outlook hidden from view, well off the road, somewhere in the bush.
